Planning for earthquakes and emergencies

Wellington sits on active fault lines, so emergency planning isn’t optional. Every business needs a clear plan for how workers will respond, evacuate and stay safe in an emergency.

What workers should do during and after an earthquake or other emergency
Evacuation routes, assembly points and assigned responsibilities
How workers, visitors and others will be accounted for
First aid, emergency supplies and communication arrangements
How the plan aligns with building or landlord arrangements

Our frequently asked questions and answers

Is work-related stress a health and safety issue?

Yes. Work-related stress may indicate a psychosocial risk that needs to be reviewed and managed. The response should be based on the work-related factors involved, the people affected and any overlapping employment relations matters.

Do office-based businesses need an emergency plan?

Yes. Every workplace needs emergency procedures. In Wellington, that plan needs to properly account for earthquakes.

Do I need a health and safety representative?

The answer depends on the business, the work and whether workers have requested an election. Our advice team can assist in understanding the circumstances and the applicable worker participation requirements.

Do you come to our workplace in Wellington?

Yes. We’ll usually start with a free phone call to understand your business and what support you may need. Our consulting service can then include an initial workplace visit, with additional paid face-to-face support available when needed.

Between visits, our New Zealand-based 24/7 H&S advice line is available by phone or online for day-to-day questions and ongoing support.
