Our frequently asked questions and answers
Does health and safety law apply to a family farm?
Yes. A farm operated as a business is a PCBU and has duties to workers and other people affected by the work. Exactly how those duties apply depends on the work arrangements and the people involved. Start with a free phone call to understand your obligations.
What should a seasonal worker induction cover?
It should cover the work the person will do, relevant hazards and controls, vehicle or machinery rules, emergency arrangements, supervision, and how to report an incident, hazard or concern. The content should reflect the actual property and role.
How should we manage people working alone or remotely?
Set up a reliable check-in system, make sure workers have a way to call for help, and plan what happens if someone misses a check-in or can’t be contacted. The arrangements should reflect the risks of the work, the location and how quickly help can reach them.
Do you visit farms and workplaces in the Waikato?
Yes. We’ll usually start with a free phone call to understand your business and what support you may need. Our H&S Consulting Service can then include an initial workplace visit, with additional paid Face-to-Face support available when needed.
Between visits, our New Zealand-based 24/7 H&S Advice Line is available by phone or online for day-to-day questions and ongoing support.
